Wading & Sea Birds

Flight of the South Downs Curlews
This tapestry is the first of the Wading & Sea Birds series.
When finished it will portray the silhouettes of three Curlews Numenius arquata in flight.
The inspiration came whilst reading about the Southern England Curlew Project. Managed by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust and Norfolk Estate in West Sussex. They have been headstarting Curlews to establish a breeding curlew population on the South Downs.
Intertwined with the Curlews are woven strips of colours representing three of the essential habitats needed by the birds throughout the year - spring and summer meadows; mudflats; moorland.
