ARTIST STATEMENT
The natural world has been an intrinsic part of my life. From the early days of living in and exploring an urban environment, encouraged to explore further afield, to then working in conservation. Moving through life observing the seasonal changes and natural ecological cycles in species and habitats.
Direct connection through walking in different landscapes evokes memories from the past and creates new ones. Recall of natural colour palettes; the rhythm of the weather upon environments; the flight patterns of birds; the textures of vegetation as I move forward to then pause and reflect. Then immersing myself in the process of creatively recording my observations, through illustration, weave and stitch.
Through my creative practice I aim to replicate an open window to the natural world. Providing intrigue as well as messages of conservation and hope; species life stories and the habitats in which they live. Capturing the strength and beauty of nature alongside its fragility.
I find peace in the repetition of mark-making whether that be in paint or pen, yarn or thread. My process evolves from the first marks in my sketchbook or perhaps a photo, developed further into pieces of varying scales. Sometimes enlarging a tiny detail into a planned and repeated semi-abstract form, or simply portraying the harmonious colours of a habitat taking a more spontaneous approach, but still creating a sense of place. Textures are developed further by using different yarns, threads and natural fibres alongside varying techniques. Bringing subtle three dimensionality to my work.
My current tapestry weaving is focusing on ‘colours of the land’, small tapestries capturing a moment in time and season. Larger tapestries are exploring ornithology, particularly wading and sea bird species. Stitching projects tend to be landscape based, often portraying geological and other elements.
