Mussel Shells

Interpreting the colours and textures found in discarded mussel shells

The Blue mussel Mytilus edulis.

Left - the weathered outer surface

Right - The pearlescent inner surface

The Green lipped mussel Perna canaliculus

Right - shimmering shades of green still evident on its textured and worn outer surface

Embroidered on 100% wool heavyweight fabric woven in West Yorkshire

Kelp spread across the beach, brought in at high tide and left at low tide.

Holdfasts attached to large pebbles and also torn from their stipes, separated from the kelp blades.

Laid on a bed of red algae.
