Flight of the South Downs Curlews

‘‘Flight of the South Down’s Curlews' aims to explore the fragility and decline of this wetland and wading bird species, alongside the habitats that are essential to its survival.

Carefully curated colour blends replicate three habitats – grasslands and damp pastures;  moorland used for breeding in the summer, and coastal mudflats which they migrate to in the winter.  These combined with the silhouette of the birds in flight, show how all are intertwined and critical to ensure the species survival.

This tapestry is particularly significant in relation to the South Downs National Park, as the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust are working closely with the Norfolk Estate in Sussex.  The 5 year project focuses on headstarting Curlews to establish a breeding curlew population on the South Downs. The aim of the South Downs project is to determine whether headstarting is an effective technique for reintroducing curlew to southern England.

This tapestry will feature in the South Downs Open Exhibition, being held at Petersfield Museum and Gallery.
